My fellow classmate at the North Bennet Street School, Jacob Mueller, is selling his newly finished viola, modeled after the 1676 Conte Vitale by Andrea Guarneri. It measures 16.5 inches and is set-up with boxwood fittings. If you or anyone you know are interested in trying out this instrument, please send me a message, or contact Jacob Mueller directly at jacobvmueller@gmail.com.
As a fiddle player, the stretch isn’t so bad once you get used to it (as a fiddle player, please excuse the sketchy intonation..!) I was pleasantly surprised to find this viola very easy to play. It is responsive, colorful, satisfyingly deep, AND GREAT for fiddling, which is something Jacob apparently had in mind when he was making the instrument. The strings feel nice under the fingers and I had no issues maneuvering around the neck.
As for the tunes in the video… The Blackbird, some jig in A dorian, a waltz setting of Pretty Maid Milking Her Cow, the Old Bush, and Shove That Pig’s Foot Further Into The Fire (DGDG tuning).
